Standard Chartered Marathons

The Standard Chartered Marathon characterises the values and attitudes we believe in and live by every day - having a can-do attitude, the courage to try, and the stamina and determination to go the distance.

In 2007/08 more than 200,000 runners took part in eight Standard Chartered Marathons across four continents.

The Greatest Race on Earth

MarathonsThe Greatest Race on Earth Earth is the world's only team marathon series. The event transforms the traditionally individual sport of marathon running into an exercise in teamwork, cooperation and collaboration. The four marathon cities - Nairobi, Singapore, Mumbai and Hong Kong - represent some of the world's most challenging urban running environments.

A new initiative to engage the public as well as the runners called The Environment Challenge was introduced for the 2007/08 series. Along with the USD 1.08 million prize pool on offer to the national teams themselves, participating GROE countries now also stood to benefit from an additional USD 1 million as part of the Environment Challenge. This new challenge encouraged people to select and undertake up to eight environmental pledges suggested on www.thegreatestrace.com, and then nominate the GROE nation they wished their pledge(s) to support. Standard Chartered will donate USD 1 million to support vital environmental conservation projects, working in partnership with WWF, that will benefit the three nations that generated the most environmental pledges per capita - Brunei, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Inspiring individuals

At Standard Chartered, we're inspired by people who are passionate about what they believe in - and who have the courage to overcome obstacles to achieve their goals. By sponsoring these individuals, we are able to share their vision and stories with our customers and staff.

Blind athlete, Henry Wanyoike, and his running partner, Joseph Kibunja, take part in all of our marathons, speaking to thousands of people about the importance of having the courage and the right partner to pursue their dreams. They have also helped raised awareness and millions of dollars for our global community programme Seeing is Believing.

Young cricketers, Alastair Cook and Stuart Broad have worked extremely hard to earn a place in the England team. They continue to aim high, sharing their passion with our staff, our customers and young people.

Youth sports

Standard Chartered sponsors youth rugby programmes in partnership with the Rugby Unions in Singapore and Hong Kong. The aim of the programmes is to extend participation to lower income classes, giving more than 7,000 young people in 130 local schools the opportunity to develop their skills and create new options for their future.

We also sponsor the International Cricket Sixes in Hong Kong, helping to promote the sport through this annual international event.
