Community Investment

Using our skills and knowledge to make a positive contribution to our communities

As an international bank with a significant presence in developing countries, Standard Chartered is in a strong position to be a force for good in the communities where we do business.

We believe that we can best achieve that by developing and supporting initiatives that link our core business activities, expertise and resources with the key issues facing these communities. We also recognise the need to support programmes that both meet our commercial imperative of building a sustainable business by contributing to the communities we operate in.

Through our community investment strategy we seek to strengthen relationships between our business, local people, governments and customers. We also want to secure the commitment of our employees, giving them the opportunity to get involved in voluntary work that can develop their skills and contribute to our long term business goals.

We operate community initiatives at three levels:

  • Global programmes such as Seeing is Believing, Living with HIV and a new programme called GOAL.
  • We support two regional programmes in Africa - Nets for Life and our Community Partnership for Africa. Set up in 2001, the Partnership supports 17 projects across nine countries, with the aim of helping to eradicate poverty in the communities in which we operate. Activities include providing clean water supply, improving health facilities in remote areas and awarding scholarships to deserving students.
  • We also support a range of local programmes.
