At Standard Chartered, we want our employees, people who use our services and the wider community to understand our approach to sustainable lending. We also want to play a part in raising awareness of sustainable development by arguing for change and influencing policy-making.
To help our employees manage the complex social and environmental risks associated with lending, we've developed a number of training courses and seminars.
In 2006, 1,500 people completed an e-learning course on social and environmental risk, taking the total number of participants to 4,500. Employees in Mumbai and China also attended training seminars and we ran a course on the Equator Principles for key people from a wide range of departments. In addition, our international graduate programme includes modules on social and environmental risk, including work on live cases.
It's also important to us that people outside Standard Chartered understand our position on lending and see that we have the right policies in place. We published our first report on Sustainable Lending and the Equator Principles (PDF, 520KB) in 2006, and we plan to publish sector-specific policies on areas such as forestry, palm oil and ship-breaking as these are developed.
